Lilizela Provincial Tourism Awards highlights industry’s importance to economy

The Western Cape, Limpopo and Eastern Cape celebrated their respective Lilizela Tourism Provincial Tourism Awards in the last two weeks, honouring the best of the best tourism businesses in their provinces.

The provincial awards form part of the preliminary events leading up to the national Lilizela Tourism Awards on 9th November, being held at the Sun Arena in Pretoria.

The Western Cape leg, held at the Devonvale Golf & Wine Estate in Stellenbosch on Friday 13 September, showed that the province’s strengths lie in the traditional categories such as hotels, lodges and self-catering establishments, all of which provide anything from three-star to five-star opulence.

Most of the winners are based on the province’s coastline, as seaside establishments have bolstered their standards in recent months.

Provincial Minister for Finance and Economic Opportunities, David Maynier, said the tourism sector remains the backbone of the Western Cape economy, supporting over 300,000 direct and indirect jobs.

“Every stakeholder in this industry, no matter how small, fulfils an incredibly important role in delivering a culture of service excellence which supports the tourism industry and in turn, grows our economy and creates jobs. They are the everyday heroes in our communities.”

Limpopo was all glitz and glam

The glitz and glam of Limpopo’s tourism industry was on show at the Protea Hotel Ranch Resort, south of Polokwane on Tuesday 18 September, as stakeholders gathered to honour the province’s tourism and hospitality businesses.

Limpopo has upped its game in recent years, becoming an increasingly important destination for tourists looking for a rustic yet luxurious getaway. This fine balance has spawned unique travel experiences such as traditional homestays.

CEO of Limpopo Tourism, Nomasonto Ndlovu, welcomed stakeholders by emphasising, “These awards are designed to celebrate the best of the best and all the tourism stakeholders who contribute to Limpopo’s economy.”

The evening was hosted by proud Limpopo – actress Rami Chuene and author of Africa is open for business Victor Kgomoeswana – who both added to the glitz and glam of the evening.

Speaking at the Limpopo event, Tourism Grading Council of South Africa’s (TGCSA) Chief Quality Assurance Officer, Darryl Erasmus, said: “The Lilizela Tourism Awards ensures South Africa meets traveller expectations. It recognises the players who strive for excellence and authenticity as we secure our global competitiveness.”

Tourism is the new gold

It was at the Eastern Cape Lilizela Tourism Provincial Awards, held on Thursday 19 September, at Dan’s Country Lodge in Mthatha, where the idea of tourism being the new gold first surfaced.

Speaking at the event, MEC of the Eastern Cape Department of Education, Mfundile Gade, highlighted tourism’s importance in becoming one of the economy’s leading sectors and the country’s largest job creators.

“The tourism sector is truly the new gold. Tourism continually outperforms other traditional economic sectors by adding significant numbers in the South African labour market. With the realisation of the incredible power this sector has in empowering thriving economies, government looks to put more resources in place to help sustain the sector.”

The MEC highlighted the tourism department’s efforts to open doors to previously disadvantaged Individuals, stating that the improved representation in the Lilizela Tourism Awards is an indication of the sector’s growth.

In 2013, just 1.3% of previously disadvantaged individuals were represented at the Lilizela Tourism Awards. In 2018, that figure rose to 37.4 %.

Gade articulated that there are opportunities to diversify the Eastern Cape offerings by developing products that entice international tourists and also encourage domestic travellers to explore destinations outside of their traditional patterns.
