Hilton Durban, hosted the inaugural Hilton Durban Golf Cup at the Durban Country Club (DCC). The day was characterised by great golf and exceptional food, with the prize-giving dinner, being held at the recently opened Big Easy Durban by Ernie Els Winebar & Grill. The big winner of the evening, was the Els for Autism Foundation, which benefitted from the proceeds of a silent auction. The R30 000 raised, will be used by the Els for Autism Foundation to support local initiatives in KwaZulu-Natal.

“It was both a pleasure and an honour to help raise the profile and raise funds for this exceptional foundation, started by golfing legend Ernie Els,” said Markus Fritz, general manager of Hilton Durban. It gave the field of 40 golfers extra incentive knowing they were playing for fun, but also with a purpose. The prizes and auction items were great too… so it was a win-win for everyone involved.” Local golfer Chris Beukes came out tops as winner when he shot a 40, followed by Jason Bird and Muss Gammon at second and third places respectively. The top prizes included a trip to Dubai to attend the final European tour event, ‘Race to Dubai’, a weekend away for two people, for two nights at the Conrad Pezula in Knysna and 100 000 Hilton Honours points to be used in any property worldwide.

There was fun for the young as well on the practice tee at the DCC, with a ‘GameOn’ Golf Clinic run by the Ernie Els Centre for Autism with assistance from SNAG KZN. Twelve children on the Autism spectrum, from various Durban schools, were given the opportunity to learn the basics of golf in a relaxed, fun environment. The ‘GameOn’ concept aims at developing life skills, encouraging social interaction and promoting healthy living through golf, for individuals living on the autism spectrum.
