Tau Game Lodge in the Madikwe Game Reserve is celebrating it’s 20th anniversary and has evolved into a luxurious 5-star safari destination, popular with South African as well as international visitors.

This milestone anniversary coincides with September being World Rhino Month, with World Rhino Day falling on 22 September 2015. The Madikwe Game Reserve celebrated Rhino Day on Saturday 19 September, with some 250 guests from all the lodges in the reserve joining in the activities, comprising a bush walk of 5km. This proved an exciting initiative to educate guests on the bush and the importance of preserving rhino, of which 700 were lost to poachers this year alone, raising funds for the rhino and celebrating the dedicated anti-poaching unit in the Reserve.

Highly qualified guides escorted guests on this unique exercise, for which many rules and regulations were implemented for strict adherence by the North West Parks Board to ensure the safety of participants. The Park Ecologist was also on site to answer questions.

About 250 people (guests, children & staff) began the 5km walk through Madikwe, along a stunning route taking in caves, acacia thicket and stunning open areas to raise both funds and awareness for the plight of our rhinos.

The walk was fronted by The Madikwe Mambas, a running team made of both local people and staff from within the reserve. Many of them ran the route, despite a brief interruption by elephants along the way! All of the walkers were flanked by armed rangers, and also followed by support vehicles, who safely loaded all participants onto safari vehicles to pass the elephants without unnecessarily disturbing the animals. How many people can say their morning walk was interrupted by elephants?? It was a fantastic opportunity for young and old, able and less able to experience the bush on foot.

Guests reported an exhilarating and most informative experience, with many either wishing to return or recommending the event to their friends to participate in next year.

I must give five stars for client service to Godfrey who was just amazing in all the questions he answered. Truly a real ambassador for the lodge. Keep it up!! You are an inspiration to me. I already sent my pictures of the lodge to my corporate counter parts and they will definitely make bookings to support you.” 08-Sep-15
