Charnet Nortje, a first year student at Guvon Academy recently led food demonstrations at the Sandton Woolworths. Shoppers were invited to look, taste and participate as Charnet demonstrated her competency as a “professional chef in training”.
Woolworths kindly provided students a store slot during which they had the chance to demonstrate a special meal. Charnet opted for the pan-seared salmon, served with sweet potato, rocket, cherry tomato and avocado salad drizzled with a balsamic reduction.
Charnet, like a host of other students, is training at Guvon Academy to fulfil her dream of becoming a top chef. The Academy forms part of the Guvon Hotels & Spas portfolio and offers a wide variety of accredited training programmes, national certificate programmes, skills programmes and short courses for the hospitality industry.
The next student intake is from 6-20 January 2015 and students wanting to take a gap year or want to get practical experience are welcome to contact Adrie van der Merwe, who heads the Academy.

“What sets Guvon Academy apart from other hotel school training facilities is that we are often able to provide jobs to student who excel in their chosen course, said Ms van der Merwe, director of Guvon Academy. “We provide practical experience to our students as we are directly aligned with hotels within the Guvon Hotels & Spas group. This enable students to get first-hand experience in hotels and lodges ranging from golf resorts to game lodges.”
