Zimbabwean-born Augustine Maungwe has been appointed manager of the Victoria Falls Safari Club, a 20-room Africa Albida Tourism property, which offers guests a butler service.
Mr Maungwe said: “I always enjoy working while I’m smiling, so here and there I always tease people, just to extract a smile out of someone. That’s what makes me really enjoy what I do. Just guest interaction. If there is a problem I like trying to solve it, and I enjoy being responsible for a guest’s happiness.”
The relaxed environment at the Victoria Falls property makes for a more productive team. “You know you have potential to deliver whatever possible because you don’t have any unnecessary pressures pulling you down,” Mr Maungwe added.
Mr Maungwe moved back to Zimbabwe from Pietermaritzburg where he was front of house guest relations manager at the exclusive seven-star Karkloof Safari Spa.
After five years of studying and working in South Africa he felt it was the right time to come home.
Elsewhere, the job and business markets are saturated, whereas in Zimbabwe it is not, and it is still growing, he said. “I believe if you have something solid you can offer, this is the ripe moment for you to come and position yourself in Zimbabwe,” Mr Maungwe said.
He had this in mind when he returned to take up his new position, and he hopes by the time tourism really booms again in Zimbabwe, he will have become a respected hotelier.
